Our article about the 10 best movies featuring the hospitality and hotel business a couple of years ago was one of our most popular ever posts and has led to much discussion and debate subsequently. How could we possibly have left out this one or overlooked that one, so in response to the feedback, here are a few more suggested by our readers.

Burnt (2015)

Fun movie about the drive to achieve 3 Michelin stars. Apparently, some of the scenes were filmed in the kitchen of 3-star Michelin chef, Eric Frechon.

Storyline

Four Rooms (1995)

The misadventures of hotel bellboys and concierges seems to be a common theme in Hollywood, so here’s another for good measure…

It’s New Year’s Eve at the Mon Signor Hotel, a former grand old Hollywood institution, now fallen upon hard times. The movie chronicles the misadventures of Ted, the Bellhop. He’s on his first night on the job, when he’s asked to help out a coven of witches in the Honeymoon Suite. Things only get worse when he delivers ice to the wrong room and foolishly agrees to watch a gangster’s kids for him while he’s away… what could go wrong?

The Shining (1980)

The Shining was apparently inspired by author Stephen King’s stay at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado (see more about this in our article on Haunted Hotels around the World).

This Kubrick classic remains one of the scariest movies ever made and Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Jack Torrance still give me the chills.

Storyline
Haunted by a persistent writer’s block, an aspiring author and recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrance, drags his wife, Wendy, and son to Colorado’s secluded Overlook Hotel after taking up a job as an off-season caretaker. He is warned to avoid the hotel’s abandoned rooms and in particular, the off-limits Room 237…

Grand Hotel (1932)

This movie won a best picture Oscar and was a vehicle for many Hollywood A list stars. Most memorable was the most famous line delivered by Greta Garbo – do you know what it was?

Storyline
Berlin’s plushest, most expensive hotel is the setting where, in the words of Dr. Otternschlag, “People come, people go, but nothing ever happens.” The movie follows the lives of a group of very different individuals staying at the hotel and how they deal with each of their respective dramas…

Hotel (1967)

Based on the 1965 best seller by Arthur Hailey, it was made into a movie in 1967 and a popular Aaron Spelling TV series in 1983. The character of Curtis O’Keefe (head of the rival chain) was reputed to be have been based on Conrad Hilton.

Storyline
Hotel is the story of an independent New Orleans hotel, The St. Gregory, and its management’s struggle to regain profitability and avoid being assimilated into the O’Keefe chain of hotels. As the story is told, we see the dramas of its various guests unfold.

Hotel Transylvania (2011)

This classic comedy was the first of the series and nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. It has subsequently become a successful franchise, with a fourth movie expected in 2021 and a TV series running on the Disney channel since 2017.

Storyline
Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish ‘five-stake’ resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday. For Dracula, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when a human stumbles upon the hotel for the first time and takes a shine to Mavis.
